Design & Technology

Intent

At Cholsey Primary School we want our children to develop a range of skills and knowledge that will enable them to design, make and evaluate products from Early years through to end key stage two. This is a curriculum area that allows them to express their ideas and interests and it is our intention to give them the opportunity to experiment, invent and create their own designs in a practical way.

Following the national curriculum aims, our children will acquire a broad range of subject knowledge and draw on disciplines such as mathematics, science, engineering, computing and art. Pupils learn how to take risks, becoming resourceful, innovative, enterprising and capable citizens. Through the evaluation of past and present design and technology, they develop a critical understanding of its impact on daily life and the wider world.

Implementation

Design and technology begins from the minute they join us in Foundation Stage where children are encouraged to learn to construct with a purpose in mind, using a range of tools and techniques. In all years, children are encouraged to explore how products work for example by taking them apart. They investigate different mechanisms like levers and sliders and use these in their own innovative designs. As part of their work with food, pupils are taught how to cook and apply the principles of nutrition and healthy eating.

Impact

Pupils enjoy their lessons and seeing their creativity through from design stage to finished product. They gain a wealth of skills that they can transfer into other curriculum areas. They enjoy receiving feedback from their teachers and peers and are confidently able to critique the work of others.
