Art & Design
Intent
Art and Design at Cholsey Primary School provides our children with the opportunities to develop and extend skills that express their individual interests, thoughts and ideas.
It is a subject where great pleasure can be gained and we want our children to be proud of their art achievements.
Following the national curriculum aims, we aim to ensure our children:
- produce creative work, exploring their ideas and recording their experiences.
- become proficient in drawing, painting, sculpture and other art, craft and design techniques.
- evaluate and analyse creative works using the language of art, craft and design.
- know about great artists, craft makers and designers, and understand the historical and cultural development of their art forms.

Implementation
Children from EYFS upwards are encouraged to get creative and are exposed to a wide variety of media that enables them to acquire key skills and knowledge through their time in school. Skills are revisited and mastered across the different phases. Sketch books follow the children through school. Artwork features across our curriculum for example in geography the children may use sketching when observing the local area. Children are encouraged to aspire to produce their best finished pieces through different drafts and are encouraged to critique each other’s work. We place a lot of importance on giving children an audience for their work and exhibit finished pieces digitally and through in school displays.
Children enjoy taking part in national art challenges such as Take One Picture.

Impact
Our children will enjoy and value Art and Design and know how it is relevant in the world. They will progress to secondary school and beyond, with the confidence to express their creativity in the subject. They will know about artists and designers and how they have influenced the world and country. Our children will appreciate Art and Design showing they have the confidence to try varied Art and Design activities and opportunities and have the resilience to keep going when their ideas or work don’t go to plan. The impact of our curriculum will be measured through observations, pupil interviews and book scrutiny.
